Dr. Shepherd on helping patients with bad breath Read Transcript
There are a number of things that can cause bad breath and bottom line is the bacteria in our mouth. There are a number of places that bacteria tends to accumulate in our mouth. A few years ago, we started offering tongue scrapers to our patients on a pretty regular basis because it tends to get harbored in the tongue surface. We have a number of patients who have started using their tongue scrapers on a regular basis to keep their tongue good and clean and their breath nice and fresh.
Periodontal disease is another big contributor to bad breath. We've got a pretty regimented program in place to help our patients who have periodontal disease to get that under control and that significantly improves their bad breath. Then there are some patients who their bad breath simply comes from their tonsils. There are crypts in the tonsils that tend to accumulate bacteria and food. Over time, it just smells absolutely abominable. Even if your tongue is clean and your gums are clean and your teeth are clean, your breath may still be bad. If that's the case, we have ENTs that we work with to get your tonsils out.
